Post-graduation - Back in Singapore
2 years on; and it's a whole new world as compared to 2006... so how will things turn out for me?

last night... at a little restaurant along some alley...
3 guys + 2 bottles of wine = lots of funs!!
let me tell you something... when one reaches his tipping point, one feels invincible despite it being 10oC and wearing only a T-shirt...hahahahahahah... we should do this more often... =)

exactly 10 days to the day i will board the plane in lisbon and fly back home...
things i will definitely miss:
- 10 days of classes (literally) = 8 hours of microstructure & interfaces + 8 hours of physics (i am so dead) + 6 hours of manufacturing processes (inclusive of 1 industrial visit to a glass factory) + 8 hours of chemistry + 12 hours of characterization ($#@$%$@@) and finally 4 hours of metallic materials
- leandro...
- nice freshly-baked bread from Tulipan pastelaria
- 8 hours of german...
- my bed + 2 thick blankets + freakingly cold nights = heaven... =)
things i will definitely not miss:
- the sound of my alarms at 7.15am
- the 11 hours of light per day (if i am lucky that is...)
- ........
whoa! this is wrong!! so wrong!!!!

freak weather...
look, many parts of portugal are now flooded... and leandro said that he had not seen so much rain now as compared to the last 10 years....
whoa! could it be my wish coming true?? looking at the reports of various freak weather occurrences recently, eg snowing in certain parts of australia despite it being 2 weeks away from summer, i prayed that it will snow in portugal, particularly in aveiro...
will i have alzheimer's disease??
read an article recently, and i realized that i belong to the high-risk group...
- i hurt myself during football last week... according to the article, injuries from contact sports are huge contributors to brain diseases
- i have back pain occasionally... research shows that constant back pain shrinks your brain... loss of grey matter in patients with back pain was equivalent to 10 years of aging...
- my highest academic achievement is university... and i am doing my post-graduate studies now... another study reveals that the higher your level of education, the faster is your memory loss related to alzheimer's... whoa!! almost all my friends are affected by this... =P
darn! what type of articles am i reading these days...?! and i think i shouldn't spend so much time studying....!
tips for a man...
things that a man should never do...
i) check your BlackBerry in bed... to a woman, that's equivalent to having a threesome with your boss...
ii) ask for a kiss... her eyes will say yes or no, and nothing kills the mood like asking for a translation...
iii) mess with another man's automobile... we don't care if he stole your wife, your job or your dog... it's blasphemy...
iv) talk salary... the more you make, the easier it is to cheapen your image...
v) have that extra drink... you know, the one that takes you from hilarious to hyena... respect your tippling point...
vi) wear low-rise jeans... so what if david beckham flashes his hash in every other men's magazine...
vii) argue with a cop... you were caught, so own up and accept defeat... the only thing that you win in this battle is a humid cell and a roommate nicknamed Stabby...
viii) go tanning... forget skin cancer... being trapped in between heating elements is for cheese...
i miss the sun in singapore...
if you think that the rainy weather in singapore is bad, you ain't see nothing yet...
in singapore...
heavy thunderstorms that flood the roads and tear down tree branches
in aveiro...
you don't get to see the sun for weeks... the university had to employ sandbags to prevent excess water from gushing into the lower-lying buildings.... and the mortality rates of umbrellas are like 30- 50%, and lastly, trees are uprooted....
try living in a coastal town.... brrrbbb... it's so cold....

ouch...
"hurt" myself while playing football the other day...
lesson i learnt:
studying.... work is piling up...
sky is getting dark, yet here i am, studying at my table... sigh... luckily this guidebook is really interesting, despite it being a textbook...
quoted the author:
hahahahah... wicked!!

aim: to become multi-lingual
progress: well, you can remove portugese from the list of languages-i-hope-to-speak-after-my-2-years-in-europe.. stopped going to my portugese class, and in place of that, i'm taking german... well, it's considered as re-taking considering that i spent 5 weeks in stuttgart last year learning the language...
Mission: Matrimony

starring: "War of the Worlds" star Cruise, 44, and former "Dawson's Creek" cutie Holmes, 27
tom met katie...tom was katie's childhood idol...
2 months after admitting to a relationship, katie had a bun-in-the-oven
10 months later, suri cruise was born
7 months later, vows are exchanged in the town of Bracciano, home of Odescalchi Castle
why do young ladies fall for older men??
- security?
- maturity?
- better action-between-the-sheets?
- whatever...

life.... part II
hmmm... maybe sitting in the living room, listening to the pattering of raindrops on the rooftop on a cold and wet friday night, does help to invoke thoughts about my life....
to continue where i left off earlier.... recalling about the 5 friends whom passed through my teenage years and seeing where they are now.... (we belong to a group of 9 friends who went from sec 1 -4 in the same class... or did i miss anyone out??)
huaqiang... started his career and having a steady (pretty too) girlfriend....someone whom i can share my thoughts with... same interests, same tuition teacher... recall lynn...?? lying on the floor staring at the night sky atop a carpark in tampines...(man! it felt soooo gay just thinking about it now) and that shooting star!! yes, that shooting star... the one who said that boys don't mature until the age of 30... thanks huh...
poh choon... promising young lad, who, due to some freak accident. had his life changed forever...nevertheless, shown great strength and determination to get to where he is now...
ah bek... class monitor... forever the class monitor in my heart... hahah... what that means is that you have to organize our CNY visits to mrs yeo's place for as long as you can imagine...can't run my friend... lanky guy... still wondering how he managed to grow so long....err.. i mean tall.. all of a sudden... should be finishing his NS soon... engaged to his longtime girlfriend... eh, expecting to attend your wedding soon... oh, this guy will always be remembered for his chinese-sentences-construction abilities...erm, i mean inability...
alan...the joker of the class... never fails to piss off all the teachers... and he's the only one whom i spent 6 years together in the same class... the one who dare to fall asleep in the a.maths prelims paper... champion! checking out gals together as classmates... felicia (long and lanky), that year 1 junior from SCGS and lastly that miss-what's-her-name-again? relief teacher... but despite these, he's the high-flier now... literally... future pilot with SIA... damn, he is going to earn the most moolah afterall....
zhiqiang... the most mature and the quietest one... wonderful career as a policeman now... (last heard) ... was never on the best of terms, but he's a nice guy...
hmmm... don't expect many of these guys mentioned above to ever see this blog entry... but remainder to those who read this.... don't ever lose touch, make it an effort to meet up regularly, no matter how, cos i don't ever want our meetings to be limited to either weddings or funerals...
life...
went through the blogs of several friends, and i am happy for all of them... hmmm, where do i start??
1. junxiang...
-buddy throughout secondary, jc and university... even though he did eventually went back on his word to go backpacking with me... due to the unexpected emergence of a girlfriend... (see what a woman can do to you?? devours your soul + wallet and spits out a lifeless soul with a depressed wallet) anyway, this is not about having a galfriend..ah, he finally found a job that may enable him to pursue what he wants to do in life... so many congrats....
2. jiasheng...
-buddy throughout secondary, jc and university... even though he did eventually withdrew from ntu to go to nus... looks like he is doing pretty well in his company...
3. chee sing...
- the one who always disappear from our radar.... but heard that he is now a father to a newborn baby girl... congrats congrats... and hope that there are many more to come... =)
-jiasheng said that the baby is sooo cute!! hope that the little girl will not look too much like her father, she may just hate him for that in the many years to come....WAHAHAHA... kidding!!
kinda envious of them... all 4 of us started out together as a bunch of pimpled 13-year-olds in temasek 12years back... and now, look at the 4 of us...
junxiang = newfound job + a gf who is pestering him to start a family
jiasheng = wonderful career
chee sing = mysterious career + happy family
and me = lots of debts to clear + depleted bank account + no career + no plans to settle down
only thing i have over the rest are
i) travelling and experiences
ii) no responsibilites
fat monkie...
no thanks to (a) potato chips, (b) chocolate bars, (c) my big bottle of nutella and its evil counterpart...the spoon... (tried eating nutella off a spoon?? it's yummy, you know??)
arrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!

singapore in CNN
singapore was mentioned by the CNN this afternoon... twice...
i) president bush stopping over in russia before continuing on his journey to singapore... to think the GCE 'A' & 'O' levels papers have to be delayed for an hour on this coming thursday and friday due to road closure in the morning...
ii) the 'far eastern economic review' magazine is banned in singapore just because of an article featuring dr chee soon chuan... sigh... what a joke... the CNN interviewed some analysts who said that by doing this, singapore is actually impeding the information inflow... and that this will eventually affect the economy... adversely...
Disclaimer: personal opinions are withheld in this blog entry... what is stated is just what CNN reported.... nowadays, you never know who is reading your blog...

sex quotes by celebrities
saw these on one newsapaper...
"Women might be able to fake orgasms. But men can fake a whole relationship." - Sharon Stone
"Having sex is like playing bridge. If you don't have a good partner, you'd better have a good hand." - Woody Allen

"My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch." - Jack Nicholson

"Ah, yes, divorce, from the Latin word meaning to rip out a man's genitals through his wallet." - Robin Williams
"According to a new survey, women say they feel more comfortable undressing in front of men than they do undressing in front of other women. They say that women are too judgmental, where, of course, men are just grateful." - Robert De Niro
"There's a new medical crisis. Doctors are reporting that many men are having allergic reactions to latex condoms. They say they cause severe swelling. So what's the problem?" - Dustin Hoffman
"There's very little advice in men's magazines because men think, 'I know what I'm doing. Just show me somebody naked !'" - Jerry Seinfeld

"It isn't premarital sex if you have no intention of getting married." - George Burns
cold weather
weather forecast says that thursday will be a super-duper-cold day... with maximum temperature hitting a maximum of only 13oC
how cold is 13oC?? hmmm... these last couple of days, when the windows are opened, i would see a white mist coming out of my mouth when i breathed... the feeling was...
and this scenario only happened in the morning or at night.... when the temp is approximately 13-15oC, so the thought of getting 13oC for the whole day is not very comforting....
therefore, before i let the cold weather get to me this coming thursday, i shall go shopping for yet another jacket tomorrow afternoon =)

run harder!! and faster!!
ok, think i better cool down and tone down my language a bit...
anyway, been working hard at my fitness these few weeks... tummy looks slimmer =) and think there is a slight V-shape coming up... or is that my imagination?? nevertheless, i am motivated to train hard cos some of my classmates are soooo keen, that's the advantage of having almost all guys for my masters course... crazy about football, running, working out and whatever other stuff...
but, i have this niggling feeling that any possible V-shape will probably turn into a pear-shape after my 3 weeks back in singapore... hahaha... well... i'll try to control myself and please don't tempt me... well... a little is fine... =p
%$#^(*)(*
went for lab session for the module "microstructure & interfaces" this morning and we were tasked with calculations and mixing the ceramics powders with the binder... and that #%$^&^* fellow student was like instructing me on how to use the pipette...
$^&)(*&^%$%# what??!! i had never used a pipette before meh...?!?! @#$%^&*!!!
just because i treat you really nice during classes does not mean you can treat me like a idiot
^&%$$$%!!! argh!!! spolit my entire morning!

classmates of mine
looking at some of the sms from my friends in aveiro.... oh man, we belong to the same type... am i fortunate or what?
alexis :"so bad!! these f**king boring teachers!!" when i mentioned that the metallic materials lecturer sucks
fabio :"no problem! i'm still drunk so it will be meaningless anyway..." 2 hours into the lecture, and my brazilian friend had not appeared yet
fabio (again) :"oww no!! i should have stayed at home spending this time sleeping... f**k!!" when he realized that the 2nd lecturer wont be turning up for class...
i am beginning to like this class... =)
tv show ---> reality??
watched the show "the prince & me" on tv earlier... story was about how a gal gave up the chance of being with her loved one in order to pursue her dreams...
it may be a teenage flick; but it did induced many thoughts...
will there ever be a day when i have to make a choice between dreams and love?? whoa, simply thinking about it seems so depressing...

work is finally starting to pile up, yet there is no urgent desire to start mugging... which is considered as a rarity due to the following factors...
there are no tutorials, assignments or anything (maybe thats the difference between doing a post-grad and undergrad- you are expected to be more proactive...)
they take a long time to post up the notes onto the blackboard... that makes revision slightly harder...
everyone is sooooooo carefree.... no worries, just relax and enjoy yourself....
ntu had given me a solid background... est 70% of the stuff so far appears to be familiar...
interesting quotes
nice... and it leave you pondering for more...
"studying is an adventure: it begins as an amusement, then it becomes a mistress, then a master and finally a tyrant" think that will only apply to people who study really hard...
"nothing is more humiliating than to see idiots succeed in enterprises we have failed in"
"if at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you have tried"
"i know you believe you understand what youthink i said, but i am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what i meant" the feeling of all teachers after their classes...

my friend mentioned that he wants to go over to germany asap cos he wants to look exotic... cos everyone here can speaks spanish (since it is somehow similar to portugese)...
as for me, in europe, i look exotic wherever i am... hahahah... =P
it's time for war!!
2 insignificant victories
1. ouch, fell from my bed while trying to kill one which was hovering near the ceiling...
2. never go jogging in shorts in the park nearby... killed at least 15 of them when i was preparing to do my pull-ups after my run 2 days back.... that scene of me flapping my arms...(last performed when i went to malaysia 12 years ago)
VS
1 crushing defeat
but the mosquitos got the upper-hand last night... well, sort of... the bites, that i suffered in the park, acted up while i was sleeping... spent the whole night tossing in bed and scratching my legs... i need my calamine lotion!!

okok, the weekend is coming again... =)
let's play the 20-statements-but-5-are-false-statements again... only difference is that i will be talking about my experiences in portugal in the 5 weeks since i arrived...
1. the transport ministry of portugal must be crazily in love with round-abouts... lots of these in portugal... everywhere in fact...
2. salt from the salt mines nearby can cost up to 5 euros per kilogram
3. when portugeses said 9am, they mean 9.15am... it's understood...
4. typical description of portugese ladies: petite, big pretty brown eyes and long lashes... and those cleavage... whoa!!
5. almost everyone owns a car... full of vehicles parked in school... as long as the land is unoccupied, it is a carpark...
6. the colours "blue" and "green" are the official colours of porto football club and benfica respectively
7. i go around the house trying to kill flies with my slippers in my hands
8. making-out in cars is considered as a "favourite past-time" among students
9. no pretty chinese gals here.. =(
10. need at least 400 euros to survive per month... excluding rent...
11. coffee... national drink!!
12. national dish... cod-fish... but all cod-fish are farmed and harvest in norway...
13. internet usage here is limited... the amount that is available to you every month is limited...
14. aloof and stuck-up... the people here...
15. i've been kisssed by more than 5 gals since i got here...
16. i miss home... =(
17. 3 of my erasmus mundus classmates are married, with the oldest one in his late 30s!!!
18. they have nothing like the "portugese egg tart" we have back in singapore, it's invented in macau instead...
19. rice is one of the staple food here
20. bean sprouts cost 1.50euros per 100grams
do try to figure out which of the above 5 statements are wrong... email me with your guesses... reply is guaranteed...
weather in aveiro, portugal
ahem... in case anyone is wondering....
weather in aveiro had been fantastic since last week... temperature is approximately 18 -20 oC during the day when the sun is out playing.... but the number of sunlight is decreasing cos we are officially in autumn now... err... from 8am - 5pm... it will be another month before the start of winter, but weather is generally fine cos aveiro is just 10km from the atlantic ocean... =)

china vs rest of the world
was watching the sky news yesterday and they actually devoted one full day of news to this particular topic:
apparently, the world's largest container ship is making its way to UK on its maiden journey... a total of 11,000 containers are on board on this ship and it started its journey from china... 2000 containers will be offloaded in UK and within these containers are the things that people need for their Xmas shopping... thus it's titled as "Christmas came early for UK"
but the key issue is that they are debating the possible impact that goods-made-in-china will have on the UK economy...
who doesn't know the impact of international trade ever since china open up her doors to import amd export?? is there anything other countries can do, in the face of the abundent cheap labour ==> cheaper goods that china can offer to the rest of the world?

i have roughly 8 hours of sunlight nowadays... of which most of it is spent in school... which means whenever i get home, it is already dark... so what happens to the remaining 14 hours? i try to sleep away most of them... =)

notes needed...
urgent... to any ntu friends who are reading this... if you still have your notes (soft copy) on anything regarding metals, pls pls email them to me at cozyvinz@hotmail.com
the modules that are of interest are:
i) year 1 material science
ii) year 2 engineering materials
iii) year 3 further engineering materials
only the metals part is required.... thank you soooooooo much!!! i should have brought my Callister book over.... shucks!!
PS: pls pls reply me, at least let me know that i still have friends who regularly visit this blog...
justifying my absence from classes
attended my first "metallic materials" class this morning, and i come to a conclusion... that is, 2 less reasons to feel guilty over the pending absence from class from 11 Dec to 22Dec... that !@#$%^ lecturer was showing the you-mean-you-don't-know-it-but-i-don't-care kind of attitude this morning... and the way he speaks or rather slurrrr.... argh!!!
yes, in case you are wondering why am i skipping classes in dec, i'm coming home!! hmmm... original plan was to come back only in feb 2007, cos of the red packets to cushion the cost of an air-ticket, but unfortunately that period of time coincides with my where-is-your-assignment-and-examinations dates, so i have no choice but to come back in dec... but i promise myself that the next Xmas will be spent staring at the falling snow through the window.... will definitely be in germany or denmark then...
oh, let me get back to the main topic, i will have to skip 10 days of classes... of course i'm going to tell my dad that i skipped only 1 week =P he does not read this blog...
10 days?!?! in my 4 years in ntu, i think i had never missed more than 5 days of classes so skipping 10 days this time really made me feel bad, cos i will not only miss the core modules, i will probably miss 4 days of german + 4 days of portugese (this,... err... i don't really care that much) + 1 visit to a glass-making factory & 1 presentation (hmmm... this one is really tricky, have to talk to the coordinator soon, as presentation accounts for 30% of the final grade)... and many other things will be missed too...
10 reasons to be guilty (to represent the 10 days of classes) - 2 reasons (metallic materials classes on 2 fridays) = 8 reasons to be guilty...
err... think i feel slightly better already... =)

on the way to being multi-lingual??
went german class for the first time today, err... to be exact, german class starts just today, and for the very first time in a long long time (16 months since i last came into contact with any german words), i actually understand some other languages, other than english or mandarin...
think my "love" for the german language actually stemmed from my "hatred" for the portugese language... what a predicament...
Wednesday, November 01, 2006
almost history...
despite leandro's claim that portugese drivers are the worst in europe (in terms of statistics), i was saved from being knocked down by one alert driver... otherwise i could have been history...
=(
global citizens
whoa.... all my peers are going all over the world... talking about the mobility of global talents...
mee mee - france (st micros)
yanting - states (st micros)
some other friends - italy, milan (st micros)
see the common point?? if you wanna go overseas for training, st microelectronics is the place to be in... =)
happy birthday!!
many friends of mine are november-babies....
1 de novembro - Huaqiang
2 de novembro - Junxiang
5 de novembro - Wanting
holidays in portugal
it's a holiday in portugal today... they called it the "All Saints' Day"... but don't be deceived by the name; it's somewhat similar to our tomb-sweeping festival (Qing Ming Jie)
on a brighter note, this is the 2nd holiday since i got to portugal... and there are 4 more (?!) in the next coming 1 month....
Dec 1 Restoration of Independence Day.
Dec 8 Immaculate Conception. (whats this??)
Dec 25 Christmas Day.
Jan 1 2007 New Year’s Day
Feb 20 Mardi Gras (Carnival) - this is interesting... mardi gras?!!? could this be what i am thinking it could be?? mardi gras..... similar to the event in the pics?!

these are scenes that i captured in Koln (germany) last year....
