yongqiang's world records!!

err.... hrmmmm... i formally declare that i have set 2 personal best records over the last 2 days...

1. longest-ever fart... timed at 5 sec or slightly more.... happened right after my 4-hour class; man, all those endurance and control i put in before the fart... takes years of practise...

2. longest-ever growling of my tummy... err... due to unexplained reasons for this...
so proud of myself =)

due for next bout of illness?

think i am due for my next bout of illness... =(

been feeling and looking like shit for the last couple of days... hmmm.... still wondering what could be the possible reasons....??

i) approaching winter?? i swear that ever since the daylight-saving thing started on sunday, i feel something wrong within me... and the sky gets dark by 1730... whoa... how can that be!? a study in england had shown that

lack of sunshine ==> depression!!

but this is impossible, cos me still feeling chirpy... so no chance of me falling into depression... so let go on to the next explaination...

ii) environment and food?? err.... dont think so, been feeling fat around the waist area... besides the environment is great!! nice room, nice bed, nice scenery...

iii) heavy workload?? hahahahahah... definitely out cos i have not even started working hard yet.... hahahahaha...

so, the final conclusion is simple... i am simply due for my next bout of illness... it's a vicious cycle...

portugal may be a conservative country (as compared to many european countries...), but some stuff on tv are like:" WHOA!!"

saw 2 guys french-kissing on a MTV channel!!!

in singapore, starhub cable tv got censured and fined for showing inappropriate contents recently...

interesting stuff...

observations over the last couple of weeks...

i) flies (yes, houseflies...) are in abundance in portugal... think for that matter, the whole of europe... but nevertheless, they seem harmless cos no one will even bat an eyelid when if one of the flies landed on their food... (oh, slippers make good swappers... =) killed a pair of them just earlier; wonder if anyone of the pair was the one that has been bothering me in my sleep for the last 2 nights??)

see attached for a systematic diagram... (pardon the awful drawing...)

ii) young people love "making out" in their cars... trust me, i am not kidding at all.... judging from what i usually see in cars parked along the road during the weekends.... and yesterday, i saw this young punk sitting in the back of his parked car, grinning cheekily... explore your imagination....think dirty... and you understand what i am trying to say... and that's not the first time i saw something similar... =)

iii) parties are part of the culture in portugal... parties are like so common, maybe its due to the approaching Xmas and halloween... and when there are parties, there will be #^%^*&* punks who would get seriously drunk and start smashing their beer bottles against the walls and creating such a din... and i live near a restaurant... imagine how many a times when i was awoken by those #$%^&&*^ punks... but well, i was young too, and i know how alcohol dulls one's brain and make them do silly things...

iv) greetings in portugal are preceded by kisses on both cheeks.... even though you have absolutely no idea who that person is... well... it was nice being kissed by a young 15-year-old gal yesterday =P

and to sum up my experience of my first month in portugal...

i) it's a wonderful experience living alone in a foreign country... and this experience is made even better when you have a wonderful landlord (leandro)... and living together with a mature 30-plus years old is certainly different from, for example, living with a 20-plus person... to further explain this...

if i were to live with sebestian in germany (a friend i got to know in germany last year), the likelihood of finding me in a "drinking hole" is way way higher... but here in portugal, i am more inclined to have some conversations in the evenings with leandro at home... well, this is a way to broaden my thinking too... =)

ii) things are totally different from singapore... you have to be adaptable and try to understand the mentality of people of whichever countries that you are in, and with that, you will be able to cope better... well, i'm still learning about the culture here, but i guess 6 months (at least that's the case in the event that i move over to germany to continue my 2nd semester) will be enough for me to understand portugese people better...

portugese lunch

lunch was at this traditional portugese restaurant... and it's the 2nd time i went there, my my my, the food is great! and it's not too expensive too...

met 2 new friends today... mother and daughter pair; they are friends of anna... and that young lady can speak relatively good english... =) and she is friendly too...

went to the supermart with leandro earlier, bought 36 litres of water, think that amount is sufficient for the next 3 weeks... yippee!!! don't have to lug back water from the supermart again... don't laugh, it's no joke cos the nearest mart is like 20min away by foot, and there are no buses...

weekend is here...

whoa.... its only the end of fri?? hmmm.... cant wait for monday to come, cos sometimes its really boring to be alone at home, not to mention that me in a foreign country.... and my classmates?? hmmm.... the south americans are the most fun... drinking and partying... the africans are more serious, they dont drink nor party... and the 3 other asians?? one is always on the internet chatting with his countrymen, and the other 2 - i dont even know what they do in their free time... oh, one european too... but i can't connect onto her frequency...

so what can i do.... maybe do some sports over the weekend... the sun is out, somehow it's so warm today, as if the sun is trying to compensate for the lack of sunshine over the last 10 days....

err... sebestian haven replied to my email yet... oh, sebestian is a good friend of mine whom i got to know in germany last year... been thinking that i may want to fly over to germany for the Xmas period... to catch some snow over there in germany too =)

my materials characterization module will be taught by several lecturers, but this lecturer is really interesting and funnie, even though i still find this module sucky...

quoted:"

i) my motto is to be happy, just give me all the various samples to analyze, and i will remain happy...

ii) people now are buying bigger and bigger machines, just to look at smaller and smaller things... referring to SEM and TEMs...

iii) they (companies) pay me so much money, so that i can continue to buy bigger and better machines... referring to better SEMs "

wow... think prof tim white will love to make friends with this man.... birds of the same feather flock together...

dinner...

err... was criticized by bee over my last pic of my dinner... she said it was too simple and everyone knows how to prepare it anyway... =(

now, presenting.........................

pasta with tomato sauce with meatballs.... hey, the sauce was prepared from scratch, not those instant sauce from the supermart....

cultural differences

drastic clash of cultures...

saw a couple of my male classmates holding hands earlier on their way to the washroom...

in india, sri lanka and certain countries:

guys holding hands = brotherhood

but in places like europe,

guys holding hands = curious stares and distorted imagination (go figure out what i mean...)

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

i got my pillow!!!
finally, i have something to hug in bed... =)

where's my sunshine??

let me see, the total number of hours of sunshine i had seen over the last 1 week = less than 10hours...

is it even normal to be raining for more than 8 days continuously?? wow... no wonder the people at the salt mine region cleared their "mountains" of salt the moment the sun appear for a brief moment yesterday...

Monday, October 23, 2006

bbbrrrrbbbbbbbb.... it is getting cold......

back from lisboa, Óbidos, Peniche & Nazaré...

here are some of the pics... weather was not fantastic, err... actully weather was bad, rain rain rain... that explains the lack of clear blue skies... nevertheless, the trip was fun... =)

man, i'm feeling so sleepy...

Thursday, October 19, 2006

someone please remind me why i didn't take "characterization techniques" in my final year in ntu......?

i'm sooooo dead!!

-_-"

reality bites...

the prof quoted this in the afternoon:

"in portugal, there are only 2 TEMs (transmission electron mircoscopy) and one is in the university of aveiro...am i lucky or what!? also, here we have a 15-year-old SEM (scanning electron microscopy)..."

looks like what madhavi told me earlier is true... =(

back in ntu, we have 4 SEMs, including one FESEM (field emission SEM) + 1 TEM....

ok, this is happy stuff... a junior of mine got married days ago!! wow... what can i say? all the best lichoo!!

err... sorry cos i didn't get your permission in posting your pic...

outbreak...=(

people say once you are overseas, your complexion will become better... but mine seems to be getting worse...hmmm... what can be the possible causes?

been brain-storming, and here are the possible causes:

i) low humidity + the cold weather
ii) quality and quantity of sleep
iii) quality of the water that i drink + drastic change in my diet

hmmm... thought that:

i) low humidity + cold weather = less oil on face = less prone to pimples??
ii) i slept so much more, though i do have lots of weird dreams recently
iii) mineral water not better meh?? and the food seems healthy with less fried stuff and oil...

conclusion: must slap on more moisturizer, sleep more or rather improve the sleep quality by buying myself another pillow or bolster ( i need to hug something at night) and finally drink more water... the last count, i have finished 10 litres over the last 4 days...

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

weather in general:

overcast.... rain....overcast again....suddenly the sun is out, and things are appearing to be bright and cheerful.... then overcast again... rain....the sun....rain....

all these in a span of 1 hour....

start of the semester....

ok, it is definitely about time that school starts for me...

got the timetable as well as the exam schedule today, looks like i am having a 5-day week with full-day classes on tuesday and thurs... it's been a long time since i have such a timetable

another thing to add, the coordinator said:" you guys are here not just to pass the modules, but you are expected to do well in the first place, since you are awarded the scholarship..." well.... i try my best not to fail....
-_-"

but well... anything is better than staying at home, which theortically is great cos i am still getting paid, except that i have NOT gottan the money in the bank yet.... =(

was told by the international office personnel that i will definitely get it on friday latest... but the ONE most important thing that i learnt about portugal (ok, maybe it's not fair to the ENTIRE portugal population...) is that:" when they say monday, add 4 additional days to that i.e. friday"...

well, after being denied of moolah for so long.... i deserve a nice dinner on friday, that is, if i get the money by then....

same principles apply...in science as well as life...

like nanoparticles that tend to coagulate together in order to minimise their surface energies, people tend to group together too, especially if you are from the same countries...

examples:

i) a russian classmate of mine stays with her fellow russians in the same apartment
ii) a brazilian classmate does the same thing too...
iii) so are all the ethopians, nigerians....

so where does that leave me??

Sunday, October 15, 2006

sunday sux, cos tmr i will have portugese classes which i absolutely hate...

anyway, what a day i had:

morning: spent playing football by the sea (or the atlantic ocean will be a more correct term) at a 5-a-side court... leandro's friends of course... my kicking is better as compared to last week... but easily the worst player...

afternoon: this is amazing i tell you, spent 2 hours sitting in front of the washing machine... cos instructions are in portugese so i had to literally look and understand the operations... 2 hours... no joke... just staring at the various operations... guess even leandro has no idea that HIS washing machine does a 4-cycle-of-spin-and-dry operation if i turn the timing knob to number "1"

evening: some crappy english movie on tv... but dinner was nice... the meat sauce that leandro taught me in the afternoon...

Saturday, October 14, 2006

domesticated monkie....

i felt "domesticated"... not that i was wild to start with, but...

a foreign environment + only 7 classmates so far + the fact that most people here don't speak english = domesticated me...

luckily for me, classes are finally due to start this coming wednesday... good, finally i don't feel like me wasting my life away... i just can't wait for wednesday =)

Estádio Municipal de Aveiro

nice stadium, one of the stadium for Euro 2004.... pity the home team lost 0-3 to the team from braga...

a picture paints a thousand words...

think i need some pics in my blog, its getting boring....
(a) me - monkie chua
(b) shopping mall in aveiro
(c) first interaction with wildlife in portugal, it's a ladybug on my jeans

shopping spree?

leandro told me this morning that i won't be able to survive the winter with the clothes that i have with me.... so....it's shopping time for me!!

went to the forum aveiro(imagine it as the orchard road equivalent in aveiro), and checked out the prices of clothes in the various shops...

well obviously i won't be able to afford hugo boss or stuff like that, but what caught my attention are the prices from ZARA...yessss, it's the one in orchard that sells really nice stuff.... hmmm, could it be due to the approaching winter, their shirts are relatively cheap.... as compared to singapore prices of course... like a shirt will cost 100bucks in singapore, a same one in aveiro cost between 25 - 30 euros (hey, thats like a discount of 50%!!!)...

woots, i am going to paint the shopping mall RED when i get my scholarship allowance!!

university orientation

judging from what i saw earlier in the day.... the freshmen orientation in singapore is nothing compared to that in the university of aveiro, portugal...

!!! i thought i saw what resembles a mass orgy in the field... !!!

..........errr........ they will be drowned in cages if they repeat this act in ancient china....

good,but just not good enough....

received an email from the royal institude of technology (kth) in stockholm (sweden), informing me that i have been accepted into their international masters programme which is scheduled to start in jan 2007...

let me recall...... ever since i graduated from ntu, i received a total of 4 different offers from various universities... there's one phd offer from ntu (singapore), one masters offer from the erasmus mundus scholarship program, and a grand total of 2 masters offers from chalmers university of technology, and this royal institude of technology, both of sweden....

hmmmm.... me submitted 5 applications altogether, so that's a success rate of 80% so far...BUT out of these 3 foreign offers, i was only offered a scholarship from the erasmus mundus scholarship... didnt manage to get scholarship from the sweden universities...

conclusion......

i'm not bad, but simply not good enough....=(

i ate bugs bunny

ok, this is terrible... had lunch at the school canteen today, thought what i was eating was chicken.... well it tasted very much like chicken indeed....

until my friend went:" you like to eat rabbit??"

eeeekkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

portugese lessons...

wow... guess i can't avoid learning portugese any longer.... mug mug mug.... class is starting this afternoon...

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

it's 5.30pm in the afternoon now...

and the dogs are having hell of a good time now...

comparison of air ticket prices....

toying with the idea of flying back to singapore something in febrary during the inter-sem break or maybe even during Xmas.... however, a chat with leandro (my landlord) reveals the following:

return air ticket to singapore : 970 euros (min) + 30 hours travelling

return air ticket to canada : 400 euros + 6 hours travelling

a 1-week tour inclusive of air ticket to Brazil (cos it's summer during december) : 1000 euros

see the difference? it's a tough call....

a very good friend of mine mentioned to me during the msn conversation earlier:

- she and the boyfriend had applied for a HDB flat
- planning to ROM next year

well, it got me thinking.... how and where did the guy propose??

will it be the casual (as well as the most commonly used method)
"lets apply for a HDB flat together"
after some hanky-panky session in the bedroom
or is it the

"will you marry me?"
armed with a ring and the guy on his knee and the venue like...err..... atop the effiel tower in paris??
okok, thats a bit far-fetched given the cost involved in getting to france... let me re-create the scenario again, say maybe in a hotal bedroom or some posh restaurant...

remembered hearing this from my close group of female friends...
"if he ask me in the bedroom, i will kick him out of the bedroom immediately....!!!" or "must be in some foreign countries with a romantic setting...."
err... that's you i'm talking about... bee, cynthia, liting, kit..... =P

wow...man... its sure tough trying to get married nowadays.... =(

if i have a gun....

things to do if i have a gun...

i) shoot the dogs, below the apartment where i am staying, which will bark at between 4-6pm daily... its like they are programmed to do so... another less cruel alternative will be to feed them sleeping pills at around 3pm daily, but thats too much of a hassle... just stick to the shooting....

ii) shoot the coordinators of the programme... they delayed the semester by a week!! becoz there are a few more students who haven arrived yet... why why?? i should have stayed in singapore a week more...

iii) myself of course... after the shooting, i wouldnt want to stay in a jail where i cant understand what everyone else is speaking... =p

disclaimer: at this point in time, no dogs had been harmed in anyway, no coordinators were being shot at, well... except for the icy stares i shot at them this morning....

Sunday, October 08, 2006

read the straits times online earlier... wow... PSI reading of 150?! better take care of yourselves people...

went for a game of soccer today with a bunch of locals... way older than me, but you never be able to guess their ages with the way they shout, run and kick...

soccer is a religion in Portugal, and people are absolutely nuts about it, but nevertheless, football is football, no matter where you may be, the rules are the same and people will shout at you or encourage you when you do something wrong or right respectively... these locals + the ones i met yesterday for lunch really made me feel like home... especially when i, not only can't speak their language, i look totally different from them... and from their attitudes towards me, you would have thought that i had known them for ages... =)

Saturday, October 07, 2006

i was kissed!!!!

one, two... three.... four?!?! wow... today was my first ever interaction with portugese people...

first, i went to the market in the morning with leandro... met his neighbours... a very nice old couple, and i had to greet the lady by putting my cheeks on hers... and making that "muah" sound, twice... one on each side... oh, she said that i should help her granddaughter since she is studying chinese... me teaching chinese?!

the next 3 times?? accompanied leandro and his girlfriend (anna) to anna's son's first-ever soccer match... cute, it's a age-group soccer league for 8-years-old... the son, pedro, is soooooo adorable... long messy hair.... big brown eyes... anyway, fun to watch kids kicking the ball around the field... and hey, i dont see them crumpling to the ground when tackled by fellow players... unlike the international football players... a bunch of pussies!! act as if they were shot the moment they were tackled...

oh, looks like i detoured a bit... back to the kissing... met up with another group of locals... nice people and we actually went for lunch together.. and there were 3 ladies... and you know, its only polite that i greet them using the local way...

=P

i made history!!!

omigod, it seems like me had made history... i am told that I was the first ever singaporean studying in aveiro, portugal...

wow wow wow... made me more determined to do my country proud...

any suggestions people??!

lonely...........

i feel lonely here...

in the day, i will either be in school (though i haven started school yet but i will go school to settle the administrative stuff) or go out with leandro (like today)... BUT when night falls, i will always be sitting in front of the tv set, and watching the room get progressively darker.... that feeling... hmmm.... how do you describe it?? intolerable lonely feeling... and that ringing sound you have in your head, whenever the place is too quiet....

man, i hate this feeling.............

it's a mess

still wondering why i left singapore to come to portugal... 5 days since i got here, and nothing is certain, save for my accommodation...

school is supposed to start on monday, and till now, no timetable, no schedule, don't even know where the classes are held... blah blah blah... this is going to be a long long 4months in portugal...

met up with some seniors (who came from hamburg)... all brazilians... nice blokes who gave some wonderful advice... think me will definately move over to germany next semester...

finally, settled my contract and also my tax number and bank account... spent like 4 hours trying to get these issues out of the way... i can see my allowance coming =)

where is home??

looking at the moon in porto, i realised that the moon actually do look different from that in singapore...
-_-"
even though the moon is the same anywhere in the world....

on second thoughts, i think i simply miss home in singapore too much... NO oily chicken rice, NO minced pork noodles, NO laksa, NO this... NO that...NO everything... nothing at all in portugal... =(

NO terrapins to talk to when i am bored...

NO people i can gossip to....

NO kakis i can go swimming or shopping with...

NO...

NO......

NO..........

NO...............

NO.......................

NO...................................

trip to porto

just when i thought that edinburgh (scotland) was the prettiest city i had ever visited, here comes porto of portugal...

Wednesday, October 04, 2006

the city + my new classmates

city of aveiro is soo pretty... how do i put it...? will attach pictures of the city when i have the time to do so... explore the town alone today, seems much nicer than i expected...

met some of my fellow erasmus mundus students earlier today, there are currently 2 programmes hosted by the university; masters in materials science and also masters in higher education learning... students come from all over the world, got quite a number from brazil, russia, african countries, china, japan, and even one from malaysia and thailand... but in my course, there seems to be only one asian and that's me =)
hope i will be able to blend in with the crowd...

anyway, thurs is a public holiday and the international office is organising a trip to porto... yippee!! hope this trip will be nice... will post some pics when i get back...

the start....

hmmm... where do i start? from the flight to lisbon, portugal to the panic experienced when the train to aveiro took longer than expected?

singapore --> london --> lisbon --> aveiro --> university of aveiro --> accommodation

this simple process took me a grulling 36 hours... flight to london was a sour-sweet experience. firstly i was assigned a seat in the middle row, which effectively meant that i was cut off from MY toilet breaks... luckily the lady next to me was a chinese (there were only 3 chinese on board) and a student too... that made my life on the plane so much easier... chatting and going to the toilet was no longer a problem =) and know what? the flight stewardess come over and started chatting with us in mandrian...

security checks in london was a absolute nightmare... that "only-one-hand-luggage" policy was strictly enforced and the fact what i was with a laptop simply made it worse.

flight to lisbon wasn't too bad, lots of empty seats and more legroom made the trip so enjoyable... the custom personnel looked shocked when he heard that i am actually going to study in portugal, well that's not a good start isn't it??..
-_-"

from airport to the oriente train station took me almost an hour... the guidebook stated only 10min... in a desperate attempt to save moolah (aka money), i tried to take a bus... after waiting for 20min, the bus driver told me that i should be waiting at the opposite stop instead... dragged all my luggage to the opposite stop and after another 30min of waiting, i found myself unable to board the bus (again?!) as it was really crowded... pissed and tired, i decided that a taxi was needed, and while making my way to the airport taxi stand, i saw the bus!! without anyone on it... seems like the same situation in singapore..."NO COME, ALL NO COME; ONE COME, 3-4 COME"

bought a ticket from lisbon oriente station to aveiro... now, i was all alone + the fact that i have like 4 pieces of lagguage made going to the toilet such a chore... even on the train, i was constantly on a lookout for my stuff... I NEED TO GO TO THE TOILET!!!

lastly, managed to get to the aveiro station, but not without some anxiety as the train was kinda late and i thought that i had missed the aveiro station when the train stopped at another station moments before that... the taxi uncle was really nice, even though i didn't understand a single word that he said... universidade dos aveiro, here i come!!

nevertheless, this did not signify the end of my journey... was initially told to stay in a guesthouse for 3 nights (since thurs is a public holiday) before i can get my permanent accommodation on friday, only to be informed at the very last min that they had found some place for me to stay... but i have to wait at the university for another 4 hours... =(

met my landlord at 8pm... nice cute looking guy who lives minutes away from the university... hey he looked like that guy from the show THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN... but cuter... anyway, i am his first ever tenant... the room is simple, as he wasn't expecting any tenant until next mon... but he did go out and try to make my stay comfortable... =)
so for 200euros per month, i have a whole apartment to myself...cos he is at work for the entire day most of the time...

that's it!! the start of my new life in portugal... well, at least that's the case for the next 6 months...

tear-jerking session at the airport??

sent out a series of sms-es this afternoon to friends... hmmm... judging from the number of "err... who are you? sorry, i just changed my phone/ lost my phone/ spoilt sim cards", looks like people do have a tendency to delete away contacts of people, whom they think they will never ever contact, after a period of time... and it seems like i have been forgotten by quite a number of people... =(

anyway, seems like i will have a mini entourage of people who will be sending me off... good thing??

quote a friend of mine:" the tears will start flowing when you finally board the plane and the plane takes off..."

wow... think me pretty emotional, will drop tear or two during emotional shows... cried my heart out when i watch that pending-end-of-the-world show starring Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck.... hahahahah.... this crying scene better not happen to me tomorrow... argh!!

I WILL NOT LOOK BACK ONCE I ENTER THE TRANSIT AREA!!!

lousy attitude of drivers

saw an ambulance on the road yesterday... so disgusted with the attitude of the most drivers on the roads... the sirens and the flashing lights were turned on and obviously it was an emergency. but despite this, the cars on the right-most lanes refused to give way to the ambulance...

If i ever have one wish, i wish that drivers who refuse to give way to ambulances will, one day, be the ones lying injured or sick in the ambulance themselves!!
