flaw in EMMS curriculum
ok, some bitching...
after studying (or rather slacking through) this emms masters course for the last 4 months, i came to realize that there is a major flaw in the curriculum... "we are studying too much stuff!!!" i mean, not that i am complaining because of laziness, it's just that there are simply too much details squeezed into each module...
for example, prof abadie took 1 whole semester to cover the concepts of polymer chemistry (and here, i don't mean the undergraduate module, talking about his PHD modules), here in aveiro, the prof took 3 lessons....
another example, based on the materials physics module alone, we have 6 -7 different professors, each one of them specializing in one area... so that translates into 6-10 different reference books for that single module alone...
i know, some of you may argue:" but you are doing a masters course and that you must be able to work independently", but what’s the point of covering the basics of everything, and expecting us to be able to understand the concepts in the exams? i see NO point in this... and when someone ask me whether i understand, err...say NMR, i can only say:" heard of this, got 6 hours on this, but beyond that, i cant explain anything about NMR to you?" see what i mean...
maybe i am simply feeling frustrated cos of all the deadlines for the reports... hmmm... and exams are coming soon... catarina (the portugese phd student in my chemistry class) was saying the exact same things to me too... see, its not just me...
never a hardworking student to start with, think its time to start studying smart....in ntu, i just have to focus on certain stuff such as calculations and the applications cos i know that's what the professors usually go for, but here in aveiro, think i have to study in detail the concepts instead... well, that's my study plan... hope i am right, i don’t want to retake the papers again in the july special exam period...
"if i can't pass now, what chance do i have after 6months of totally ignoring the module?"

yeah man ! u r right!! it took me one semester to learn NMR and IR and here we got both techniques in two classes... and they expect in the exam that we can identify compounds, man! And we didn’t even discuss typical bands and peaks as we should do it in order to learn how to identify unknown compounds, believe you me!! I’m not trying to fool you! Heheh=)!! the same in the characterization techniques, they talk to much but we haven’t done any analysis, let me tell u, one learn characterization technique by dealing with spectra, exercises and analysing problems not by listening to boring lectures about too much technical stuff that perhaps we are not going to deal with... the scope of a master is to go to technical details not to broad a large range of concepts!!! Well this is my way of release pressure too!! For example the article I have to discuss is about calibration on cooling in DCS ... aha!!! I guess is it important but it doesn’t have anything to do with the thing I should learn!!! At least in a few months I can be able to identify different concepts in Mat Sc !! hehehe!! I bitch to much!!
ANONYMOUS...=)
somehow, i have this feeling that its you alexis... hmmm... then again, it must be you, cos you are the only one (in the EMMS class)who knows my blog...
HEHEHE!! WELL U GOT ME AGAIN!! U R SO SMART MY FRIEND..HAVE A NICE WEEKEND!!
